Cream cheese and toast with blueberries is made with simple ingredients, most of which you may already have on hand. Scroll to the bottom of the post to find the recipe card with exact amounts.

Ingredients for cream cheese toast recipe with blueberries and 15 other variations.

Whole Wheat Bread: I like to use whole wheat bread to make this a healthier cream cheese blueberry toast, but you can use any type of good quality bread slices. Sourdough and regular white bread would both taste great.

Whipped Cream Cheese: My homemade whipped cream cheese is really easy to make with a combination of cream cheese, honey, salt, and lemon juice. The honey slightly sweetens the cream cheese, the salt enhances the flavors, and the lemon juice gives it a fresh taste, creating a delicious lemon blueberry toast flavor.

Homemade Blueberry Compote: Made with blueberries, sugar, chia seeds, water, lemon juice, and lemon zest, you can use fresh or frozen blueberries to make my compote. You don’t even have to defrost them. The water and sugar are key ingredients for any compote, while the lemon adds acidity for more flavor, and the chia seeds help thicken the mixture.

Watch my video below to see how quickly it comes together.

Prepare Blueberry Compote: To begin, I prepare the blueberry compote by adding 1 cup blueberries along with all the other compote ingredients to a saucepan. Then I bring the mixture to a boil, stirring continuously to ensure the compote doesn’t burn.

Blueberries and lemon zest cooking in a pot to make blueberry compote.

Simmer & Cool: Once the mixture reaches a boil, I reduce the heat and let it simmer until the blueberries are cooked and the sauce thickens, which takes about 4-6 minutes. As the blueberries cook, I use a spatula or spoon to gently press the berries and release their juice.

Afterward, I remove the compote from the heat and let it cool. If you prefer a smooth compote, you can blend it in a food processor once it has cooled.

Prepare Whipped Cream Cheese: While the compote cools, I combine the cream cheese with the rest of the whipped cream cheese ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix until smooth. Alternatively, you can place the cream cheese ingredients in a food processor and blend until smooth.

Toast Bread & Assemble: After the compote and whipped cream cheese are made, I toast the sliced whole wheat bread in a toaster or in the oven until golden brown. Then I evenly divide the whipped cream cheese and blueberry compote between the toasted bread.

Add Toppings & Serve: To finish, I top with the remaining fresh blueberries and a sprinkle of lemon zest.

My #1 Secret Tip when making this recipe is to serve it right away. This ensures the toast remains the perfect texture and doesn’t become soggy. Nothing is worse than a soggy piece of toast!

Other Tips To Keep In Mind:

  • Room Temperature Cream Cheese: For easier spreading, I always take out my cream cheese early and let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before using it. This makes it much smoother and easier to spread, giving you that perfect creamy base for your toppings.
  • Make-Ahead Components: You can prepare the cream cheese filling and blueberry compote ahead of time and store them in airtight containers in the fridge for up to 4 days. This way, you just need to toast your bread and assemble when ready to eat.
  • Choose Your Bread Wisely: The type of bread you use makes a big difference. A thick, hearty bread like whole grain, multigrain, sourdough, a baguette, or rye works best. I’ve found that you need something sturdy enough to hold up to the cream cheese and the delicious toppings.
  • Toast The Bread Enough: Make sure to toast your bread until it’s golden and crispy. This gives you a nice crunch that contrasts beautifully with the creamy toppings. Just be careful not to let it get too dark or burnt.

📖 Variations

What goes well with cream cheese on toast!? Anything and everything! From savory to sweet and even spicy, I’ve got 17 cream cheese toast ideas to pick from.

  1. Fresh Fruit Or Fruit Compote: My family loves my homemade blueberry compote as a topping, but you could also use apple or pear compote, or even make a mixed berry compote! Fresh strawberries, peaches, pears, or apples would work well too.
  2. Roasted Blueberry Toast: Instead of a blueberry compote, I’ll switch things up and roast my blueberries for a deeper, more intense sweet flavor.
  3. Preserves And Jams: I love using all types of jams – try berry jam, peach preserves, apricot jam, my strawberry chia seed jam, or fig spread to make another type of sweet cream cheese toast.
  4. Cream Cheese Honey Toast: A simple combination of cream cheese and honey on toast is delicious and easy! Add fruit for even more flavor.
  5. Smoked Salmon Or Lox: Salmon is a classic topping for cream cheese! Add some capers, thinly sliced onions, and fresh dill to round it out.
  6. Avocado Toast: This is one of my new favorite ways to make avocado toast! I top my cream cheese with slices of fresh avocado, a sprinkle of salt, and a drizzle of lemon juice.
  7. Cucumber And Dill: You can’t go wrong with thin slices of cucumber, a sprinkle of fresh dill, and a dash of black pepper.
  8. Bacon And Tomato: Make a savory cream cheese toast by topping it with crispy cooked bacon and thinly sliced tomato for a twist on a BLT. I’ve even used plant-based bacon to keep it vegetarian friendly and it’s worked well.
  9. Mediterranean Toast: Add chopped Kalamata olives, roasted red peppers, a drizzle of olive oil, and crumbled feta cheese.
  10. Other Herbs And Spices: Personally, I think all fresh herbs pair well with cream cheese. Try topping your toast with fresh chives, basil, parsley, oregano, rosemary, thyme, or dill, and sprinkle with some sea salt and pepper, or try sprinkling bagel seasoning on top of each slice of toast!
  11. Nuts And Nut Butter: Is cream cheese good on toast? Yes, it’s amazing, but it’s not the only option. Instead of the cream cheese, try peanut butter, almond butter, or even vegan Nutella or white chocolate hazelnut spread and top with blueberries or other fresh fruit! I’ll even crumble some crushed walnuts or peanuts on top, and add some sliced bananas too.
  12. Blueberry Ricotta Toast: Swap out the cream cheese for whipped ricotta, and add fresh blueberries and a sprinkle of granola for some crunch. I’ve found that ricotta makes a great substitute for cream cheese if you don’t have any on hand as well.
  13. Prosciutto And Fig: Top with thinly sliced prosciutto and fresh figs or fig jam.
  14. Pesto And Sun-Dried Tomatoes: Add a drizzle of pesto and some chopped sun-dried tomatoes.
  15. Rainbow Veggies: Layer these veggies in order on your toast: diced red bell pepper, diced orange bell pepper, diced yellow bell pepper, diced baby spinach, and purple cabbage for a “rainbow” toast. Season with salt & pepper to taste. My kids love this version because of how colorful it is!
  16. Vegan Cream Cheese Toast: I’ll often make this blueberry breakfast toast recipe plant based by using dairy free cream cheese and any vegan toppings I like!
  17. Gluten Free Toast With Cream Cheese: Gluten free bread works well with this recipe, just choose your favorite type of gf bread or try my homemade gluten free bread recipe or my gluten free buckwheat bread recipe.

🍽 Serving Suggestions

Choosing what to eat with cream cheese on toast is the best part! Sure it can be served on its own, but it goes well with almost anything. These are just a few of my favorite pairings:

For Breakfast: I like to start my day by pairing it with a glass of fresh orange juice, a hot cup of coffee, or better yet this strawberry juice or kale smoothie for a complete breakfast.

With Soups: Savory toast makes a perfect accompaniment to a bowl of hot soup like my vegan tomato soup, butternut squash bisque, or hearty pinto bean soup, the creamy texture and savory flavors of the toast will complement it beautifully.

With Salads: Enhance your salad by adding cheesy toast on the side. It pairs wonderfully with my copycat Chick-Fil-A kale salad, spinach arugula salad, or alongside mixed greens with my vegan Italian dressing

As A Side: I’ll serve the savory version of this toast as a side dish for dinner. It pairs well with pasta dishes like my red lentil pasta and vegan rasta pasta. It’s also fantastic with my vegetarian stew with rice and beans.

🧊 Storage Directions

Fridge: If I have leftover components, I always store them separately to maintain freshness and texture. You can store both whipped cream cheese and blueberry compote in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. When you’re ready to enjoy them again, simply toast fresh bread and assemble your toast.

Freezing: While you can freeze the whipped cream cheese for up to 2 months, I don’t recommend it as it will change the texture. But you can store the blueberry compote in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 2 months. Just let it thaw in the refrigerator overnight before using.

❓Recipe FAQs

WHY DID MY WHIPPED CREAM CHEESE BREAK?

Whipped cream cheese can break if overmixed or if there is a sudden temperature change. If your mixture breaks, you can try to fix it by adding a small amount of milk or cream and gently mixing until smooth.

HOW DO I FIX RUNNY COMPOTE?

If your blueberry compote is too runny, continue to simmer it for a few more minutes until it thickens. Stir occasionally to prevent it from burning. You can also add more chia seeds, which act as a natural thickener, or a cornstarch slurry (1 teaspoon of cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon of cold water). Add the slurry gradually while stirring until the compote reaches your desired consistency.

HOW ELSE CAN I USE THE BLUEBERRY COMPOTE?

Blueberry compote is incredibly versatile and can be used in various ways beyond toast. Try drizzling it over pancakes or waffles. It also makes a delicious layer in yogurt parfaits or filling in pastries. For dessert, use it as a topping for ice cream or cheesecake topping.
