I have always loved classic avocado toast for breakfast. If I’m not enjoying a warm bowl of oatmeal, then you will probably find me biting down on a crispy slice of toast topped with creamy avocado. My new favorite way to enjoy this simple recipe is with a drizzle of honey and some spicy red chili flakes.

🥘 Ingredients

Ingredients for avocado toast with honey on a white background.
  • Ripe Avocado: Use a Hass avocado if possible, and make sure it is ripe. If the avocado has a bit of give when you squeeze it, then you know it’s ripe and ready to eat. If it’s too hard it will need more time to ripen. If it’s too soft, then it’s past its prime. Place your avocado in a paper bag with a banana to speed up the ripening process if needed.
  • Honey: Use raw honey if possible. Raw honey is minimally processed and contains more natural pollen and enzymes. You don’t need a lot – a little bit of honey on avocado toast goes a long way. You can also use hot honey for some more spice!
  • Sourdough Bread: A good fresh sourdough bread pairs nicely with avocado and honey. However, feel free to use your favorite bread, such as whole grain bread or a good french bread. You can even use gluten free bread, buckwheat bread, or buckwheat sourdough bread.
  • Sea Salt And Crushed Red Pepper (Red Chili Flakes): A generous sprinkle of sea salt and red chili flakes adds flavor and depth to this avocado honey toast recipe. You can also use black pepper instead of the crushed red pepper.

📖 Variations

Best Avocado Toast Toppings

  • Spices & Herbs: Try fresh basil, oregano, chili powder, curry powder, turmeric, ginger, or garlic
  • Veggies: Try radishes, lettuces, microgreens, cucumbers, tomatoes, and thinly sliced peppers
  • Fruits, Nuts, Seeds: Try sliced apples, pears, berries, or dried fruit. For nuts – any kind of chopped nut will work. For seeds, try hemp seeds or chia seeds!
  • Protein: Try scrambled eggs or fried eggs, lentils, beans, or cheese.
  • Spreads & Drizzles: Try cream cheese, balsamic vinegar, maple syrup or agave, extra virgin olive oil, hummus, or salsa.

Other Favorite Variations

  • Make It Vegan: Instead of honey, use maple syrup or this homemade vegan honey.
  • Make It Gluten-Free: Use gluten-free sliced bread.
  • Add Fiber: Use a whole wheat bread as your base.
  • Avocado Honey Toast With Egg: Top this healthy avocado and honey toast with a runny egg for more protein and flavor.
  • Avocado Honey Toast Without Bread: Toast without bread might sound counterintuitive, but you can make this on a whole wheat pita, on tortillas (and roll it like wrap), on rice cakes, or on crackers!

🔪 Instructions

Warm Bread: Toast slices of bread in the toaster or toaster oven until golden.

❓Recipe FAQs

What is avocado toast and why is it so popular?

Avocado toast is simply toast topped with a creamy layer of avocado. The avocado can be sliced or mashed, and topped with whatever additional toppings you desire.

One of the reasons it’s become so popular over the last several years is because it’s a healthy meal, yet the taste and texture make you feel like you’re enjoying an indulgent and decadent recipe. It’s also popular because avocado spread for toast never gets boring – there are numerous variations and you can customize it any way you want!

Is eating avocado toast good for you?

Yes! This avocado honey toast is wholesome breakfast full of healthy fats from the avocado and fiber from the sourdough – both of which help to keep you full and satisfied for longer. Avocados are also rich in vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, B6, vitamin C, vitamin E, and folate.

How many pieces of avocado toast should I eat?

Typically, I recommend one slice or one piece of avo toast as a serving. This is because while avo toast is healthy for you, avocados are high in those healthy fats, and high in calories, making them a food to enjoy in moderation each day. One serving of honey avocado toast (using 1 slice of hearty toast and 1/2 an avocado) is what you should stick to each day.

How do you serve honey avocado toast?

This avocado toast with honey pairs nicely with a cup of coffee, tea, or refreshing water. Add some protein to this sweet avocado toast by serving with a side of scrambled eggs, or top with a fried egg, and (if you’re not vegetarian) a side of crispy bacon.

How do you store honey avocado toast?

If you have any extra avocado filling, place it in an airtight container with some fresh lemon juice and store in the refrigerator. The lemon juice helps keep the avocado from browning. Be sure to use the extra avocado within the day as it will brown overnight.

I don’t recommend making this honey and avocado toast and storing it, as the bread will get soggy due to the toppings. Store all of the ingredients separately, and make it right before you intend to serve it!

💭 Expert Tips

  • Squeeze some fresh lemon juice in the avocado mash to help it keep from browning too quickly.
  • Don’t over toast your bread or it will become hard. Toast until just golden brown.
  • Keep your piece of toast from becoming soggy by using a butter knife to spread a thin layer of avocado mash.
  • Take your toast to the next level by adding some shaved cucumber and thin sliced tomato.
  • Use some Everything But the Bagel seasoning to amp up the flavor instead of just sea salt!

  1. I love trying unexpected combinations of flavour, and having seated avocado toast for breakfast at least once a week for the last 5 years, I was super excited about adding some honey to it. You’re right! It works. With some salt and chilli, it’s just an amazing combination!5 stars
