Milkshakes are quick and simple but are so fun to make! My kids love to help scoop the ice cream and pour in the milk. You can make them in any flavor, but this coconut shake recipe is for true coconut lovers. Coconut cream gives it a thick, rich, and creamy flavor, while vanilla ice cream sweetens it up.

🥘 Ingredients

You can find everything you need for this four ingredient recipe at your local grocery store!

Easy coconut milkshake ingredients on a white background.
  • Coconut Cream: Coconut cream is a thick and creamy version of coconut milk. Not to be confused with cream of coconut, which is sweetened coconut cream.
  • Vanilla Ice Cream: Feel free to use any type of vanilla ice cream you like! If you’re vegan, use a vegan vanilla ice cream. If you’re on the keto diet, swap the ice cream for a keto vanilla ice cream.
  • Coconut Milk: Unsweetened coconut milk adds a smidge more coconut flavor, but you can use any kind of milk. Regular milk, unsweetened almond milk, or oat milk are great options. You don’t need to use full fat canned coconut milk, because the coconut cream adds richness.
  • Ice: If you like the coconut shake thicker, add a few ice cubes to the blender.
  • Sugar: Add additional sugar to taste. Or for a natural sweetener, use maple syrup.

📖 Variations

This easy coconut milkshake is totally customizable! Here are some of our favorite ways to change things up:

  • Toppings: Top your coconut cream milkshake with sprinkles, whipped cream, freeze-dried fruit, chopped nuts, fresh fruit, coconut flakes, caramel sauce, shredded coconut, chocolate sauce, dark chocolate chips, or crushed cookies.
  • Chocolate Coconut Milkshake: Add chocolate syrup to taste. Start with two tablespoons, then add more if desired.
  • Vegan Coconut Milkshake: Swap the ice cream with store-bought vegan ice cream, or a vegan homemade ice cream and use plant-based milk.
  • Coconut Milkshake Without Ice Cream: Swap the vanilla ice cream with a frozen banana and you’ll have a creamy coconut banana shake that’s lower in calories than this recipe but just as delicious! Add more liquid if needed. Ripe bananas provide a natural sweetness to the shake without needing any added sugar.
  • Coconut Cream Pie Shake: Top this shake with whipped cream and crushed vegan graham crackers.
  • Strawberry Coconut Milkshake: Add a cup of frozen strawberries. Use more liquid if the milkshake is too thick.
  • Matcha Milkshake: Add two teaspoons of matcha powder.

❓ Recipe FAQs

What is a coconut shake made of?

Typically, all you need to make a coconut shake is coconut cream (or milk) and ice, but that won’t give you the sweetness and mouthfeel of a milkshake. This coconut cream shake contains coconut cream, vanilla ice cream, and coconut milk. You can add ice to thicken it, and sugar for more sweetness.

Is coconut cream healthy?

Coconut cream is an unsweetened version of coconut milk with less water and more coconut fat. It’s a perfect dairy-free alternative to heavy cream. It does provide some health benefits: it’s low in carbs and sugar, and provides potassium and a small amount of protein. But because of its high fat and calorie content, it is best enjoyed in moderation.

What can coconut cream be used for?

Coconut cream is a rich and luxurious dairy-free substitute for heavy cream. It can be used to make homemade coconut ice cream, coconut pudding, cream sauces, curry dishes, frosting, ganache, and cake.

What’s the difference between coconut milk and coconut cream?

Coconut milk is a milky liquid made from coconut flesh that’s pureed with water. Coconut cream is similar to coconut milk, but it has a higher percentage of coconut fat. This makes it thicker and creamier than coconut milk.

Can you store this vanilla coconut milkshake and enjoy it later?

Technically yes, you can store it in a mason jar or airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours. However, this shake is best enjoyed immediately. If you refrigerate it, it will melt and lose its thick texture.

Alternatively, if you cant finish the whole shake, pour it into an ice cube tray and freeze. You can add the cubes to smoothies for a creamy, sweet, coconut flavor.

💭 Expert Tips

  • Serve immediately in chilled glasses, feel free to serve over ice for a cooler and thinner milkshake.
  • If the shake is too thin, add ice cubes to thicken it up. If it’s too thick, add more coconut milk.
  • For more coconut flavor, add 1/4 teaspoon of coconut extract. You can always add more, but you can’t take it out.
  • For more vanilla flavor, add 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract. (Related: How To Make Your Own Vanilla Extract).
