My kids love bananas, enjoying them in everything from their morning bananas and cream oatmeal to banana peach smoothies. They’re naturally sweet and soft, making them perfect for a variety of sweet treats, such as this chocolate-covered banana recipe.

I wanted a new recipe that’s fun and easy for kids to make, such as banana popsicles, so I decided to freeze bananas covered with chocolate and let the kids choose their own toppings. It’s such a great activity for them and even their friends on playdates.

I originally made these vegan frozen chocolate-covered bananas for the kids, but it didn’t take long before the husband got involved, decorating his banana with his favorite toppings. Ha! They’re so much fun for kids and adults alike – and so yummy! Whenever we have kids’ playdates, I set up a dessert bar for them to create their own flavors. It’s a simple wholesome snack that my kids see as a special ice cream alternative, and I see as a healthy mom win 🙂

Any recipe that lets my little guys get their hands messy (in a contained way!) is a winner in my book, and this one is perfect! They get to be in charge of the whole process, putting the sticks in the halved bananas, coating them with melted chocolate, and going wild with their favorite toppings. I set out different bowls of chopped nuts, dried fruit, coconut flakes, sprinkles, and crushed biscuits, and it turns into this epic decorating session. Honestly, it’s so much fun, and it melts my heart seeing their happy faces when they pull their own creation from the freezer!

Healthy easy sweet treats don’t get any better than frozen chocolate-covered bananas! There are no artificial flavors or preservatives, just naturally sweet bananas covered in vegan chocolate and wholesome toppings. They’ve become our go-to treat for summer afternoon snacks to birthday party activities. It’s like an edible kids’ art class that keeps those little hands busy, and it’s perfect for every dietary need. Trust me, your kids will go bananas for these!😀

🥘 Ingredients

Frozen banana pops are a fun and healthy treat made with bananas, chocolate, and toppings. Easy to make, kid approved, and perfect anytime. Here is what I use:

Ingredients for frozen chocolate covered bananas recipe on a blue wood countertop.

Crushed Cookies: I love rolling the chocolate dipped bananas in crushed cookies for a sweet and crunchy bite. My kids always pick this topping first.

Bananas: I use ripe but not too soft bananas so they hold up well on the stick. They turn creamy once frozen and taste like ice cream.

Dairy Free Chocolate Chips: I melt these until smooth and coat the bananas for that rich chocolate shell.

Cake Pop or Craft Sticks: I stick these into the bananas to make them easy for little hands to hold.

Coconut Flakes: I sprinkle coconut on top for a tropical twist.

Dried Fruit: I chop up dried fruit and press it into the chocolate for extra color and flavor. It is a fun way to sneak in more fruit.

Nuts: I roll the dipped bananas in chopped nuts for crunch and protein. They taste almost like a candy bar.

Sprinkles: I always keep sprinkles on hand because they make the bananas so festive. The boys love choosing their favorite colors.

🔪 How To Make

Making these frozen chocolate covered bananas is a super fun activity to do with my kids. Here’s how we make them:

Cut the bananas: I slice the bananas in half and gently push a stick through the bottom of each piece so they are ready for dipping.

Half cut bananas on sticks laying on parchment paper

Coat and freeze: I dip the bananas into melted chocolate, add our favorite toppings, then place them in the freezer until firm and ready to enjoy.

My #1 Secret Tip for making Frozen Chocolate Covered Bananas is to use bananas that are ripe but still nice and firm. When the bananas are just a little spotted and not too soft, they hold up so much better on the stick and are easier for little hands to dip into the chocolate. I tell my kids that these are the “just right” bananas because they are sweet enough to taste like dessert but strong enough to stay on the stick while we roll them in toppings. It makes the whole process smoother and a lot more fun for everyone.

Other Tips To Keep In Mind:

  • Prep the toppings first: I set out little bowls of toppings before dipping so the kids can sprinkle quickly while the chocolate is still soft.
  • Use parchment paper: I line my tray with parchment to keep the bananas from sticking to the pan as they freeze.
  • Thin the chocolate if needed: Sometimes I stir in a drizzle of coconut oil when melting the chocolate so it coats the bananas smoothly.
  • Double batch for later: I usually make extras and freeze them in a container so I have snacks ready for another day.

📖 Variations

Having fun when making any of my recipes is the key, especially if you have kids helping in the kitchen. I recommend trying these variations that we love and that always bring smiles to the table:

Berry Sweet: I press tiny pieces of dried cranberries or strawberries into the chocolate. It adds a chewy texture and a pop of fruity flavor.

Trail Mix Fun: I chop up a mix of nuts, seeds, and raisins, then roll the bananas in it. It turns into a snack that is hearty and filling.

Breakfast Treat: I crush up granola and roll the bananas in it after dipping. It makes them taste like a sweet frozen breakfast bite.

🍽 Serving Suggestions

These chocolate covered bananas are a favorite snack in our house, especially on hot summer days when we need something cold and refreshing, but they can also be accompanied by other delicious treats for movie night, Halloween, and kids’ playdates. Here are some suggestions:

Movie night ideas: On movie night, I whip up a quick batch of unicorn popcorn and a homemade Nutella pizza for a super indulgent, low-calorie sweet snacking session the whole family can go wild for.

Halloween Ideas: My kids also love making these healthy chocolate bananas for Halloween, along with Halloween monster cookies and funny face apples. They’re fun and great recipes for kids to get creative with!

Playdate Ideas: When my boys invite their friends over, I always get them involved in making yummy treats like this recipe, chewy vegan rice krispie treats, and nutritious protein energy balls. The recipes are made with wholesome ingredients and are so much fun for those little hands.

🧊 Storage Directions

Refrigeration: I do not keep these in the fridge because the bananas turn mushy and lose their creamy texture. They are always best straight from the freezer.

Freezing: I place the chocolate covered bananas on a parchment lined tray and freeze them for about two hours. Once they are solid, I transfer them into a freezer safe container or bag, and they keep well for up to two months.

Reheating: These are meant to be eaten frozen, so there is no reheating.

❓Recipe FAQs

Can I use different kinds of chocolate?

Yes, I have tried lots of different chocolates and they all work. Sometimes I melt dairy free chocolate chips, other times I use dark chocolate if I want a richer flavor, and milk chocolate is always a favorite with the kids. As long as you melt it slowly so it does not burn, any chocolate you like will coat the bananas perfectly.

Do the toppings have to be added right away?

Yes, the toppings need to go on while the chocolate is still soft because once it touches the frozen banana it hardens fast. I always set out little bowls of toppings before we even start dipping so the kids can quickly sprinkle them on. It becomes a fun assembly line in our kitchen and everyone gets to decorate their own banana pop before the tray goes into the freezer.

Can I use frozen bananas instead of fresh?

I have tried this and it does not work as well. Frozen bananas are already too soft once they start to thaw and they do not stay firm on the stick. Fresh bananas give you the creamy texture you want once they are coated and frozen again.
