Simple snacks are a favorite in my household especially when it’s a crunchy chip! Yet, while I love traditional banana chips, they aren’t the healthiest option since they are deep-fried and full of fat and calories.

So I asked myself, can you make banana chips in an air fryer? I use my trusty air fryer all the time because it’s a great way to create healthier versions of more indulgent treats. So, of course, I figured out how to make banana chips in an air fryer – and they turned out amazing!

Air fried banana chips are perfect for anyone looking for a healthier option than potato chips. Not only are they naturally vegan and gluten-free, but bananas are packed with dietary fiber, potassium, and Vitamin C (source).

Keep in mind, this isn’t technically a dehydrated banana chips recipe, but I like air frying better than dehydrating because my version is much faster and gives you a crispier chip! I do offer some tips on how to dehydrate bananas in an air fryer below as well.

These chips are perfect for any occasion. Pack them in lunches, add them to trail mix, toss them in salads, mix them into yogurt, or take them on the go. My kids love them too! It’s a great way to get your kids to eat more fruit.

Fresh Banana Slices: I use ripe but still firm, peeled, and sliced plantains or bananas for this recipe. You don’t want to use completely raw bananas, as they won’t taste as sweet. The same goes for healthy plantain chips, if you want to use plantains instead of bananas. Using less ripe plantains will result in a more starchy and less sweet chip compared to a regular banana chip recipe.

Lemon Juice: I use fresh lemon juice because it prevents the bananas from turning brown and gives them a bright flavor!

Salt: A little salt gives these chips more flavor and brings out the natural sweetness of the banana.

Oil / Cooking Spray: A neutral spray oil makes the chips light and crispy without overpowering the natural banana flavor. I usually use coconut oil, olive oil, or avocado oil.

🔪 How To Make Air Fryer Banana Chips

Learning how to make banana chips in the air fryer is simple and requires very little effort. All you have to do is follow my easy steps, and you’ll soon have chips that any banana lover will approve of.

Preheat Air Fryer, Prepare Bananas: To begin, I preheat the air fryer to 212 degrees Fahrenheit (100 degrees Celsius). Next, I slice the bananas into thin slices.

Season Banana Slices: First, I place the banana slices on a baking sheet. Next, I coat them with lemon juice and sprinkle them lightly with salt. Then I spray the banana slices with a little oil and repeat the process.

Air Fry Banana Chips: Once seasoned, I place the banana slices in a single layer in the basket of the air fryer (this helps prevent sticking). Then I put the basket into the air fryer and cook the chips for 40 minutes.

Check Halfway Through: Air frying banana chips will give you a crispy chip, but I always check them halfway through the cooking time to loosen any slices that might be starting to stick to the basket. This helps them cook more evenly. Once I’ve loosened the bananas, I let the chips finish cooking.

Remove From Air Fryer: Finally, I remove the thin chips from the air fryer and place on a cooling rack. Then I repeat the cooking process with the rest of the banana slices. Depending on how many banana slices I have, I may end up cooking multiple batches before they’re all done.

My #1 Secret Tip for making banana chips in air fryer is to be sure to thinly slice the bananas. The thickness of the slices directly affects the texture and crispiness. Thin slices will cook more evenly and ensure you get super crispy banana air fryer chips. I always use a super sharp chef’s knife or a mandolin slicer.

Other Tips To Keep In Mind:

  • Chewy Chips Need More Cooking Time: These banana chips will become crispier as they cool. However, if you find the chips chewy, then you need to air fry them for another 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Don’t Use Overripe Bananas: The best bananas to use for my recipe are firm bananas. Overripe bananas won’t crisp up properly.
  • Don’t Increase The Temperature: I cook the chips on low heat to prevent these sweet banana chips from getting burnt. Preheating the air fryer ensures even cooking as well.
  • Don’t Forget The Salt! The salt is optional but I have noticed that it really enhances the sweetness of the bananas. Feel free to toss the chips in a little bit of salt when they are done cooking for added flavor.
  • Don’t Crowd The Air Fryer: This will result in soggy or chewy chips! I often have to cook the banana slices in separate batches to ensure the chips turn out crispy.
  • Enjoy Immediately: For the best results, enjoy these crunchy banana chips immediately as they will lose their crispiness over time. However, they will keep for a few days at room temperature!
  • Cooking Time Can Vary By Model: When making banana chips in your air fryer, cooking times will vary based on the make and model of your air fryer oven. There are so many types of air fryers out there, and any model will work well for this recipe. Two of my favorites include the Philips air fryer and Cuisinart air fryer toaster oven.

📖 Variations

Add Savory Spices: For additional flavor and depth, I’ll sometimes add chili powder, paprika, turmeric powder, curry powder, a touch of cayenne pepper, or cumin to this great snack.

Air Fryer Salt And Black Pepper Chips: Sprinkle these chips with salt and pepper for a classic combination of flavors.

Kerala Banana Chips: Turn this air fryer banana chips recipe into a popular snack from South India simply by adding ¼ teaspoon ground turmeric and a little more salt.

Lime Juice: Instead of the lemon juice, I’ll sometimes swap in freshly squeezed lime juice for a slightly different flavor.

Sweet Spices: My kids love it when I turn this banana chip air fryer recipe into a dessert by adding a sprinkle of granulated sugar, coconut sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground cardamom or even pumpkin pie spice to make these chips sweet and spicy.

Homemade Plantain Chips: Instead of using ripe bananas, try using ripe plantains for this air fryer recipe! You can easily make tostones (air fryer plantain chips) by substituting the same amount of plantains for the bananas in this recipe. Plantain bananas are part of the banana family, but they are typically larger and thicker than bananas, and slightly more savory than sweet.

🍽 Serving Suggestions

I often enjoy these homemade air fryer banana chips on their own, but they also go really well alongside your favorite smoothie, oatmeal bowl, or breakfast bowl for a quick and balanced breakfast. I’ll even use them as a substitute for regular chips as a side for lunch. Here are some of my favorite ways to serve them:

With Breakfast: Serve some of these chips with this mango protein smoothie or blueberry pineapple smoothie. You could also pair them with this strawberry yogurt or overnight Weetabix.

With Salads: Top this apple walnut salad with some banana chips for added crunch.

With Dips: When the crispy chips come right out of the air fryer they are wonderful when served with this healthy guacamole and pineapple pico de gallo

With Dessert: Banana crisps also work as a quick plant based dessert after a main meal, or as a topping for yogurt or ice cream! They are delicious paired with this chocolate banana ice cream recipe or mango nice cream.

🧊 Storage Directions

To store, I let the leftover banana chips cool completely and then place them in an airtight container with a paper towel. The paper towel helps to absorb any excess moisture and keeps the chips crispy. They will keep at room temperature for up to 5 days. I don’t recommend freezing these chips, they don’t defrost well.

❓Recipe FAQs

HOW THIN SHOULD THE SLICES BE?

The banana slices should be about ¼ inch thick. Thin slices ensure even cooking and help achieve a crispy, chip-like texture.

HOW DO I KNOW WHEN THE BANANA CHIPS ARE DONE?

The air fryer banana chips are done when they are golden brown and crispy. They will continue to crisp up slightly as they cool. If they are still chewy after the initial cooking time, I recommend air frying them for a few more minutes until they reach the desired crispiness.

How long does it take to dehydrate bananas in an air fryer?

It will take 6 hours to to make air fryer dehydrated bananas. Just arrange the banana slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket, select the dehydrate function and set your time to 6 hours. Personally, I think actually air frying the chips is the way to go because it’s so fast, but dehydrating will work as well!

CAN I USE A REGULAR OVEN IF I DON’T HAVE AN AIR FRYER?

Yes, it is possible to use a regular oven. Preheat your oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit (95 degrees Celcius) and place the banana slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 1-2 hours, flipping the slices halfway through, until they are golden brown and crispy.

Why are my banana chips not crispy?

When learning how to make dried banana chips in an air fryer, there are a few things you need to avoid to prevent them from turning out soggy. First, make sure you don’t use too much oil. Using too much oil will result in soggy chips. Additionally, ensure that you cook them long enough. If they didn’t crisp up during the initial cooking time, you can pop them back in the air fryer for about 5 minutes until they achieve the desired crispiness.

  1. Has anyone tried them with softer bananas and how did they turn out. Did you have to make any adjustments to get the crispness? Thx5 stars

    • Hi Sharon! I haven’t tried these with softer bananas, but my guess is you would have to either airfry them for longer or make some sort of adjustment to get them crispy since softer bananas are less starchy and more “watery” so it would affect the airfrying time! Hope that helps!
