Halloween baking is something I look forward to from the beginning of the year, and these vegan Halloween cupcakes are a huge favorite in my house. I make chocolate cupcakes with a vegan buttercream frosting and turn them into spooky ghosts, silly monsters, or adorable Oreo bats. They are light, fluffy, completely vegan, and perfect for a festive Halloween dessert table.

Everyone in my house loves chocolate cupcakes, and these vegan Halloween cupcakes take that classic dessert in a fun and spooky direction with a classic rich cocoa batter and creamy vanilla buttercream. Just like snowman cupcakes are essential for Christmas time, I never go without these cupcakes on Halloween. Make sure you add this delicious plant-based dessert to your menu this season.

The idea for these cupcakes came from baking Halloween monster cookies with kids. Usually they were happy with just the monsters, but suddenly they were arguing about bats and ghosts too. It seemed that going forward I would need a sweet treat with equal representation. The best part was when I told them that they could decorate their own batches of cupcakes. And for the amount of frosting they were sneaking into their mouths, the decorating process kept them quiet and still for a long time.

From a health coach perspective, I appreciate having a festive dessert made with entirely plant-based ingredients, while my family simply sees a plate of cute chocolate cupcakes. The cocoa powder provides that classic chocolate flavor, and the homemade vegan buttercream adds sweetness and creaminess.

The baking process is straightforward, which is especially helpful when little hands are waiting nearby, eager to decorate. I start by making vegan buttermilk with non-dairy milk and apple cider vinegar. Then I whisk the dry ingredients and mix the wet ingredients in a separate bowl. I combine the wet and dry mixtures gently before dividing into my cupcake liners and baking. While I wait for the cupcakes to cool, I whip the vegan buttercream, portion it for the different designs, and decorate each cupcake as a ghost, monster, or bat.

One Halloween, I made these cupcakes for a party with all of the kids’ school friends. We had plenty of games and put on a family-friendly movie for them to watch before we let them descend on the dessert table. When they all headed for the cupcakes, I noticed no one was eating the monster ones. I asked why, and they all had a newfound sympathy for them.

I guess letting them watch Monsters, Inc. may have had something to do with it. My husband was about to eat one of the monster cupcakes when my youngest shrieked and said, “No, Dad! You’ll hurt him!” Give these a try for your next Halloween gathering, but make sure your kids do not have a particularly soft spot for ghosts, bats, or monsters.

🥘 Ingredients

The ingredients for vegan Halloween cupcakes are fairly basic but still deliver quality flavor, while the decorations really take them to the next level. This is what I use:

For the cupcakes

Vegan buttermilk: I combine non-dairy milk and apple cider vinegar to make my own vegan buttermilk, which adds moisture to the cupcakes.

Dry ingredients: I whisk together all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt for the structure, chocolate flavor, and lift needed for light cupcakes with a tender crumb.

Cane sugar: Organic cane sugar sweetens the cupcakes.

Vegetable oil: I use a neutral oil to keep the cupcakes soft long after cooling.

Vanilla extract: This rounds out the chocolate flavor and adds warmth to the batter.

For vegan vanilla buttercream

Vegan butter: I use vegan butter sticks for the base of the frosting.

Powdered sugar: Organic powdered sugar sweetens the frosting while also providing structure.

Dairy-free milk: I add this a little at a time to adjust the consistency and make the buttercream light enough to pipe.

Vanilla extract: This provides a classic flavor that works with all 3 cupcake designs.

For the monster decorations

Green food coloring: I use a small amount to create bright green frosting for the monster cupcakes.

Black sugar sprinkles: I dip the cupcake tops into these for the monster hair.

Candy eyes: Vegan candy eyes work well for the faces.

Dairy-free chocolate chips: I use these for the monster ears.

Black decorating gel: This is used to finish the face and to draw the scar.

For the ghost decorations

Dairy-free chocolate chips: Regular-sized chocolate chips create the mouth for the ghost cupcakes.

Mini dairy-free chocolate chips: Smaller chocolate chips work well for the tiny ghost eyes.

oreo bat cupcake

For the bat decorations

Oreo cookies or similar sandwich cookies: I turn these into little bat wings and part of their bodies.

Candy eyes: Vegan candy eyes give each bat a playful face.

Black decorating gel: I use this to draw a smile onto the bat’s face.

🔪 How To Make

When making these vegan Halloween cupcakes, I like to prepare the cakes first, then set up a decorating station for the final steps. This is how I do it:

Preheat and make buttermilk: I preheat my oven to 350F then whisk the dairy-free milk with apple cider vinegar and set aside for 10 minutes to thicken and curdle.

dairy free milk and vinegar

Mix dry ingredients: Next, I whisk the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt together in a medium bowl.

Whisk wet ingredients: In a large bowl, I whisk the vegetable oil, cane sugar, and vanilla extract together. I pour the vegan buttermilk and whisk again until the mixture is smooth.

Make batter: I add the dry mixture to the wet mixture and gently fold until I no longer see streaks of flour.

chocolate cupcake batter

Add to muffin tin and bake: Then I divide the batter between a lined 12-cup muffin tin and bake for 18-20 minutes. I allow the cupcakes to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before placing them on a wire rack to cool completely.

How to Make the Vegan Buttercream Frosting

Whip butter: While the cupcakes cool, I whip the vegan butter with a hand mixer at medium speed until it looks creamy and smooth.

vegan butter in mixing bowl

Add powdered sugar: Then I add the powdered sugar 1/2 cup at a time, allowing each addition to become incorporated before adding more.

Add dairy-free milk: Once all the sugar is incorporated, I add the non-dairy milk 1 tablespoon at a time while whipping the frosting. I add the vanilla extract and continue whipping for about 30 seconds until the buttercream is light and fluffy.

Decorate the Monster Cupcakes

Make green frosting: I transfer 1/3 of the buttercream to another bowl and mix in green food coloring until I reach the shade I want.

Decorate monster cupcakes: Then I spread the green frosting over 4 of the cupcakes and smooth the tops with a knife. I dip each frosted top into black sugar sprinkles to create the monster hair and add 2 candy eyes to the front and 2 chocolate chips on the sides to create ears. I finish the monster face by drawing a scar across the frosting with black decorating gel.

Decorate the Ghost Cupcakes

Make ghost cupcakes: I take another 1/3 of the frosting and place it in a piping bag fitted with a frosting tip and pipe the frosting into a tall swirl on each cupcake. Then I place 2 mini chocolate chips in the center for the eyes and one regular chocolate chip underneath for the mouth.

Decorate the Bat Cupcakes

Separate Oreo cookies: I twist each sandwich cookie apart and scrape away any extra cream from the cookie half that has less filling.

Oreo cookies twisted in half.

Break: I break that cookie in half to create 2 small wings.

Oreo cookie half broken in half, and one side with cream.

Assemble face: I use black decorating gel to make 2 small dots, use it to secure the candy eyes, and draw a small smile underneath.

Using gel pen to draw to eyes, and a mouth on an Oreo bat.

Frost and add bats: Finally, I frost the final 4 cupcakes to about 3/4 inch high and gently place the finished Oreo bat in the center. The frosting keeps the cookie in place.

My #1 Secret Tip for this vegan Halloween cupcakes recipe is to bring the vegan butter fully to room temperature before making the frosting. I like taking my butter out of the fridge when I start on the cupcakes. Soft butter whips into a smooth buttercream that is much easier to spread and pipe, while chilled butter can leave the frosting lumpy and difficult to work with.

Other Tips To Keep In Mind:

  • Do not overmix: I stop folding the batter as soon as the flour disappears since overmixing can make the cupcakes dense instead of light and tender.
  • Watch the fill level: I fill each cup only 3/4 full, so the batter has room to rise while still leaving enough space for the frosting.
  • Cool completely: Allowing the cupcakes to cool completely before decorating ensures that the buttercream does not melt and slide off.
  • Sift powdered sugar: I sift my powdered sugar since hard lumps are hard to get rid of once they have been added to the butter.
  • Refrigerate frosting: If my frosting is ready before the cupcakes have cooled completely, I refrigerate it and let it soften at room temperature before piping. This ensures that it does not melt and separate.

📖 Variations

Decorating gives me plenty of room to change up these vegan Halloween cupcakes. These are a few ways I have served them over the years:

Purple monsters: I mix 2-3 drops of purple food coloring into ⅓ of the buttercream instead of green, then use rainbow sprinkles for the hair. My kids love making their monsters look a little silly rather than spooky.

Pumpkin faces: I add 2-3 drops of orange food coloring to a portion of my frosting and spread it over the tops of the cupcakes. Then I use black decorating gel and black sugar sprinkles to create jack-o’-lantern faces. Everyone in my family enjoys making different faces on their cupcakes.

Witchy cupcake: I add cocoa powder or black food coloring to my buttercream frosting, then spread a thin layer of white or purple frosting over the surface of the cupcake and place a sandwich cookie in the center. I use the black frosting to create a pointy witch’s hat on top of the cookie. I love this version since I grew up watching witchy movies like Hocus Pocus.

🍽 Serving Suggestions

For a party, I like arranging these vegan Halloween cupcakes amongst all the other spooky treats. I recommend placing the monsters next to funny face Halloween apples, with a plate of vegan Rice Krispie treats between the bats and ghosts. Make sure you serve vibrantly colored drinks like apple carrot smoothies, too.

For our last Halloween party, I started the kids off with Halloween Jack-O-Lantern quesadillas and other fun savory snacks. Then for dessert, I served these cupcakes along with healthy vegan pumpkin cupcakes. I made a witch’s potion punch using blackberry simple syrup, sparkling water, and fresh blueberries.

🧊 Storing And ♨️ Reheating

Refrigeration: I store the decorated cupcakes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. I prefer keeping them chilled until I am ready to serve them so the buttercream stays firm.

Freezing: I freeze unfrosted cupcakes in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. I like wrapping each one individually in plastic wrap to avoid freezer burn.

Reheating: I do not reheat these cupcakes. I let refrigerated cupcakes sit at room temperature for about 1 hour before serving. If frozen, I thaw completely at room temperature before adding the buttercream and decorations.

❓Recipe FAQs

What should I do if my cupcakes dome too much?

I let the cupcakes cool completely first, then use a serrated knife to trim a small amount off the top if I need a flatter surface for decorating. This works well for the monster and bat designs, whereas I can usually use the dome shape for the ghost cupcakes.

What do I do if my vegan buttercream looks separated or split?

If my buttercream looks curdled or separated, I first check the temperature of the vegan butter. Very cold butter can struggle to blend with the other ingredients, while butter that is too warm can make the frosting loose and greasy. I let the bowl sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes, then whip the buttercream again until it becomes smooth. If the butter was too warm, I place it in the fridge for about 10 minutes, then whip it again. And if it still looks split, I add 1 tablespoon of powdered sugar and continue mixing until the frosting regains a creamy consistency.

What consistency should the cupcake batter have?

I look for a smooth, thick batter that falls easily from my spoon and slowly spreads back into the bowl. It should be pourable enough to divide between the liners, but it should not be thin or watery. If my batter seems thick, I loosen it with a bit of plant milk. And if it is too thin, I add flour 1 tablespoon at a time, making sure not to overwork the mixture.

  • Combine the all-purpose flour, cacao powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Whisk together to combine.
  • Combine the vegetable oil, sugar, and vanilla extract in a large bowl. Whisk together to combine. Add the vegan buttermilk. Whisk together until completely combined.
  • Pour the dry ingredients into the bowl with the wet ingredients. Stir until combined. Don't overmix.
  • Line the muffin tin with cupcake liners. Fill the liners 3/4 of the way full. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Allow the cupcakes to cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Vegan Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

  • Bring the vegan butter to room temperature. Do not melt the butter. It must be at room temperature.
  • Whip the butter with a mixer at medium speed until creamy.
  • Add the powdered sugar 1/2 a cup at a time until it is absorbed before adding the next cup until all of the sugar has been added.
  • Add the non-dairy milk one tablespoon at a time, whipping as you go. Add the vanilla extract. and continue to whip until the buttercream is light and fluffy.

Decorate the Monster Cupcakes

  • Transfer 1/3 of the frosting to another bowl. Add the green food coloring and stir until the desired color is achieved.

  1. Sorry it took me so long to comment on these fun cupcakes. They were a huge hit! Chocolaty and moist. My decorating was not a cute as yours although my bats were very popular. But I wanted to ask you if I was to use this recipe would it Ben enough for a cake. Either a square or round one?
My vegan grandsons birthday’s coming and would love to use this recipe. It actually rose! I have had bad luck with vegan baking until I met these cupcakes!5 stars

    • Absolutely! You can certainly make this recipe into a cake! I recommend using an 8 inch round, or 8 inch square pan. Be sure to line with parchment paper. You will likely need to bake a little longer. I would recommend 30-35 minutes.

  2. Good, but my cupcakes stuck to the cupcake liners.
Does anyone have a trick that would make them come out with ease?3 stars

    • Cupcakes will stick to liners for a few reasons. One is it could be your cupcake liner. The least expensive ones tend to stick more than ones that are made with parchment paper. Another reason is that this recipe is low in fat. Because it is plant-based and doesn’t contain any oil it has a higher propensity for sticking. For next time I suggest using a parchment paper cupcake liner, or using a non-stick cooking spray on the inside of the liners. This will keep them from sticking.

  3. These are so cute. I know so many people who would love these as normally cupcakes at Halloween don’t really come in a vegan option.5 stars

  4. These cupcakes are so cute! I will have to remember them when Halloween comes around. The cupcake came out so light and fluffy!5 stars

  5. Seeing these cute cupcakes has gotten me all excited for Halloween! Love how easy they look to make. They’re all so cute not sure I could even pick a favorite.5 stars
