The first pizza rolls I remember were the ones you got in the freezer section of the grocery store. I’m sure you know what I’m talking about! Those mini pizza bites filled with marinara, cheese, and pepperoni that were kind of irresistible. I can just picture the commercials running on the television of teenagers coming home from school, and mom bringing out a tray of pizza rolls for a snack, and watching them disappear.

But honestly, those crispy rolls were tasty, but not exactly healthy for you. So I decided to make a homemade version of those mini pizza pockets, with all of the flavor of the traditional recipe, but no processed ingredients or anything artificial!

These air fryer pizza rolls are healthier, and WAY more delicious than any frozen snack you’ll find! They’re rolled up like a cinnamon bun, with all of the gooey cheese inside.

🥘 Ingredients

Whether you choose to make your own dough or use pre made pizza dough, this recipe only needs a few simple ingredients easily found in your pantry or grocery store!

ingredients for air fryer pizza rolls

Pizza Dough:

Refrigerated Pizza Dough: If you prefer not to go to the trouble of making your own pizza dough, go ahead and get a pre-made version. My personal favorite is the whole wheat dough from Trader Joe’s.

Or Make Your Own Dough

White Bread Flour: Using a bread flour helps to create a chewier texture which is great for pizza dough. It has a higher protein and gluten content, and creates a crisp crust.

Warmed Soy Milk: Be sure to warm the soy milk. You could also use oat milk here if you prefer. The warmed milk helps to strengthen the gluten, and helps to create a brown crust.

Instant Yeast: The yeast will activate the ingredients and help the dough rise. You want a dough that rises quickly. This creates an airy and bubbly crust.

Olive Oil: A high quality olive oil helps to enhance the flavor of the pizza dough. You can also drizzle or brush with olive oil to help the dough bake to a golden and crispy brown.

Salt: A little bit goes a long way!

Filling

Pizza Sauce: Use a good quality pizza sauce.

Shredded Mozzarella Cheese and Parmesan Cheese: The combination of cheeses makes for a gooey combination. Make sure to use fresh grated parmesan.

Fresh basil (for garnish): For an herbal and Italian flare!

❓Recipe FAQs

What are pizza rolls?

Pizza rolls can be the frozen Totinos type that you find at the grocery store, that are doughy on the outside, and filled with cheese and marinara sauce. Or they can be pizza dough, topped with sauce, cheese and toppings, and then rolled like a cinnamon roll, and cut into pieces.

How long do you air fry pizza rolls?

This recipe requires that you cook the air fryer pizza roll ups for about 15-20 minutes, but the cook time will vary depending on what type of air fryer you use. For best results, I recommend checking the rolls at the 13 minute mark, and then every 2 minutes after that until they are golden brown and done.

How do you make air fried pizza rolls in the oven (instead of the air fryer)?

To prepare these in the oven, simply preheat your oven to 400 degrees F. Place pizza rolls on a baking sheet sprayed with olive oil spray or lined with parchment paper. Bake for 12-14 minutes.

How do you make packaged frozen pizza rolls in the air fryer?

If you have the famous Totinos pizza rolls, preheat the air fryer to 375 degrees F. Place the rolls in a single layer of the air fryer basket. Bake for 6-8 minutes, tossing half way through the cooking time.

What makes these homemade pizza rolls healthy?

Homemade Dough: Making your own homemade dough not only tastes better, but is much healthier than the store bought kind found in the rolled can. No processed ingredients. Just the best chewy crust!
Healthy Fillings: Choose healthy vegetables to stuff inside your pizza rolls. These fillings are low in calories, and fat, while being high in nutrients and vitamins.
Low Fat: Air frying these pizza bites allows you to get super crispy pizza rolls without deep frying!

Will kids enjoy these vegetarian pizza rolls?

Yes! Your kids will love these bite sized rolls for an easy snack, or a main meal! They’ll have so much fun picking out their favorite fillings to stuff inside. Plus, your kids will get a serving of veggies if you choose to stuff them with fresh vegetables.

👪 How to Serve

These air fryer pizza rolls can be served as a quick snack or appetizer with a dipping sauce, but they can also be served as a main dish. Serve with a side of warmed marinara sauce, extra pizza sauce, or even ranch dressing for dipping. Add a healthy Italian chopped salad to make this a complete meal.

🧊 How to Store

Refrigerate: Allow the leftover pizza rolls to cool. Wrap in an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.

Freeze: Bake pizza rolls in the air fryer as directed. Allow the rolls to cool, and transfer to a freezer safe container such as a ziplock bag. Label with the contents and date. They will keep for 2 months.

Reheat: When ready to enjoy, transfer the frozen pizza rolls to the refrigerator to thaw. Then reheat in the air fryer or the oven at 350 degrees F for 10-15 minutes.
