Whether you’re regularly whipping up delicious baked goods or you’re a home cook, you know that measurements you use play a massive role in how your food turns out! In baking especially, an incorrect measurement can easily be the difference between soft, pillowy cookies and flat, dense ones.

Conversion calculators can be helpful, but it can be confusing to navigate the various measuring systems. In this easy-to-read guide, you’ll learn essential measurement conversions like how many ounces in a quart, how many quarts in a gallon, and more.

How Many Ounces In A Quart?

Wondering how many oz in a quart? Using the British imperial system of measurement, there are 32 fluid ounces in a quart. The imperial measurement system is what we use here in the US and it’s derived from the United Kingdom. While most of the world has since transitioned to the metric system, we’ve stuck with the imperial system.

The US imperial system is broken down into two different kinds of quarts: US fluid quarts and US dry quarts. While wet and dry measurements sound the same in theory, they’re actually quite different.

US fluid quarts are made up of liquid ounces – so they’re a measurement of volume (of liquid ingredients).

US dry quarts are composed of dry ounces, which are measurements of weight (like of solid ingredients – e.g. flour, sugar), as opposed to volume.

Because an ingredient’s density does not necessarily equal its volume, the amount of dry ounces in a dry quart (weight) is not the same as the number of fluid ounces in a fluid quart (volume).

So how many dry ounces are in one U.S. quart? There are 37.2365 dry ounces in one US dry quart.

What Is An Ounce?

Technically speaking, an ounce is a unit of measurement that is equivalent to one-sixteenth of a pound. For use in everyday life, think of an ounce as being a very small amount of something, like a single slice of whole grain bread, for example.

A lot of people assume that an ounce is synonymous with a fluid ounce, however, that’s not the case.

Because an ounce is a unit of weight, it is used to measure dry ingredients like flour or cornstarch. A fluid ounce is a unit of volume, so it is commonly used to measure liquid ingredients like milk or broth.

What Is A Fluid Ounce?

While both fluid ounces and regular ounces represent a unit of measurement, it’s important to remember that they are not the same. Fluid ounces (fl oz) are volume measurements, while the latter are weight-measuring ounces.

How many fluid ounces in a quart? The answer is 32. However, fluid ounces and ounces are not interchangeable.

To convert fluid ounces to ounces, simply multiply the volume by 1.043176 times the density of the ingredient.

The formula: dry ounces = fluid ounces × 1.043176 × ingredient density.

So if you have 2 fluid ounces, and you want to convert it to dry ounces, and your ingredient has a density of 0.5, the calculation would be:

Dry ounces = 2 × 1.043176 × 0.5 = 1.04 dry oz

What Is A Quart?

A US quart is a volume unit that is equal to one-fourth of a gallon (aka 32 ounces). Both the US and UK have a quart measurement, though they differ slightly.

The UK quart is equivalent to 1.13 liters, while the US quart is only 0.94 liters.

Additionally, the United Kingdom quart system is the same for both dry and liquid ingredients (equaling 2 imperial pints or a quarter of a gallon), while the US uses a separate measurement for the US liquid quart and US dry quart.

Why Are Measurement Conversions Important?

While the United States, Liberia, and Myanmar remain in the imperial system, the rest of the world uses metric measurements today. Measurement conversions, therefore, allow us to achieve common ground. Many baking recipes are written using the metric system, and if you’re following the US measuring system, you will have to convert your measurements to bring your baked goods to life.

What Is The Metric System Of Measurement?

The metric system is based on the decimal system – so everything is related to each other using numbers in powers of 10. Modern U.K. units of measurements use the metric system today. Common measurements in the metric system include: Millimeters (mm), Centimeters (cm), Meters (m), Kilometers (km), Milligrams (mg), Centigrams (cg), Grams (g), Kilograms (kg), Ton.

How Do You Convert Fluid Ounces To Quarts?

There are a few key differences in converting fluid ounces to quarts that depend on the type of ingredients you need to measure. Below you can find a quick overview.

How To Convert Ounces To Quarts For Liquids

The best way to figure out how many fluid ounces are in a quart is to divide the number of fluid ounces by 32. This will convert the volume of a liquid from ounces to quarts.

Using this conversion factor:

One US liquid quart equals to 32 US fluid ounces and One fluid ounce equates to 0.03125 US quarts.

How to Convert Ounces To Quarts For Dry Ingredients

Because a dry ounce is a measurement of weight, the quart conversions are slightly different from that of fluid ounces.

For dry ounces, to determine how many ounces equal a quart, you’ll have to multiply each dry ounce by 0.027.

One dry ounce is equivalent to 0.02685544 quarts, while 37.2364 dry ounces compose one dry quart in the US.

Common Ounce To Quart Conversions

Fluid ounces are easier to convert because they’re whole numbers, vs. decimals. For example, if you’re trying to figure out how many ounces is 1.5 quarts, you just multiply 32 by 1.5 (there are 48 fluid ounces in 1.5 quarts).

How Many Ounces In 2 Quarts?
