A BBQ cauliflower bites bowl is a dinner I love making for my family. I take cauliflower, vegan BBQ sauce, and avocado, and turn it into a colorful bowl with sticky roasted bites, creamy slaw, and zesty cilantro lime quinoa. I have it ready in just 30 minutes, it is quick enough for a busy weeknight but still satisfying enough to have everyone at my table licking their bowls.

Bowl dinners are a huge hit in my house, and this BBQ cauliflower bites bowl has been my favorite for a long time. I thought my kids were sold on tandoori cauliflower, but I was proven wrong. Roasted BBQ cauliflower adds a smoky sweetness to the bowl while the avocado slaw brings a cool, creamy bite that works well with the fresh-flavored quinoa. If you love meals where everyone can build their own bowl, this is one you need to try.

I came up with this recipe during one of those seasons when life felt extra busy, and I needed dinner to work with me, not against me. My kids had been begging me for vegan buffalo cauliflower wings, but on this particular weeknight, it was out of the question. Then I remembered how much they love BBQ sauce, and just like that, their new favorite was born. I have never seen my kids devour any kind of vegetable with such enthusiasm. On nights when they are fussy, I contemplate covering everything in BBQ sauce. Ha!

A BBQ cauliflower bites bowl is everything I want when it comes to a balanced weeknight dinner. Apart from being an incredibly versatile vegetable, cauliflower has many potential health benefits and contains antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins C and K. It also brings a hearty texture and offsets the creaminess of the avocado. Quinoa gives the bowl extra protein plus a satisfying base that makes it a complete meal. This appeals to me as both a mom of 3 growing boys and a health coach.

As someone always busy, I love the way this BBQ cauliflower bites bowl is built in a smart order, so everything finishes around the same time. I get the quinoa going first, then toss the cauliflower with barbecue sauce and slide it into the oven. While the quinoa cooks and the cauliflower gets sticky and crisp, I make the avocado slaw. I fluff the quinoa with cilantro and lime, then divide everything into bowls for a colorful and nutritious dinner.

When I was hosting a few friends for a summer dinner, I set out all the makings for this bowl meal, and let everyone assemble their own. I made sure to include a few other things since one of my friends absolutely despises cauliflower. Which is why I was surprised to see her bowl piled high with the sticky florets. She noticed me side-eyeing her bowl and said, “Yes! I know! But I love BBQ sauce, so it’s fine.” Ha! If you need some encouragement when it comes to eating cauliflower, I highly recommend trying this recipe. I promise you, you will look at cauliflower in a whole new light.

🥘 Ingredients

I make these bowls using ingredients I always have in my kitchen, keeping it approachable and easy. This is everything I need to add flavor and balanced nutrition:

Cauliflower: This is the base of the bowl and roasts into tender bites that soak up all the barbecue flavor.

BBQ sauce: I use this to give the cauliflower its smoky, sticky coating. Store-bought works fine, but I love using my homemade vegan BBQ sauce

Tangy avocado slaw: I combine avocado, shredded cabbage, lime juice, and sea salt for a creamy, crunchy, and colorful mix.

Cilantro lime quinoa: I cook the quinoa in water or broth, then stir through fresh cilantro and lime juice to brighten it up.

🔪 How To Make

Once I get started, this BBQ cauliflower bites bowl moves quite quickly. This is how I make it on those busy evenings:

Cook the quinoa: I start by adding the quinoa, water, some of the cilantro, and salt to a small pot. Once it comes to a boil, I cover it, lower the heat, and let it cook until all the water is absorbed. You could also make pressure cooker quinoa for this recipe. When the quinoa is done, I fluff it with a fork and stir in the remaining cilantro and lime juice.

Coat the cauliflower: While the quinoa cooks, I toss the cauliflower florets with BBQ sauce and make sure each piece is properly coated.

Bake: Then I spread the cauliflower onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake in a 450F preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until browned, sticky, and tender.

Make the slaw: In the meantime, I mix the avocado, cabbage, lime juice, and salt in a bowl until the avocado lightly coats the cabbage.

Assemble bowls: To serve, I divide the quinoa, slaw, and BBQ cauliflower between bowls, and drizzle over extra BBQ sauce before serving.

My #1 Secret Tip for this BBQ cauliflower bites recipe is to roast the cauliflower until the sauce becomes sticky and concentrated instead of pulling it out the second the florets are tender. That extra bit of time in the oven lets the barbecue sauce cling to the cauliflower and caramelize around the edges, which is what makes the bites taste so good in the bowl.

Other Tips To Keep In Mind:

  • Cut even florets: I try to keep the cauliflower pieces close in size so they roast at the same pace. Tiny pieces can burn before the larger florets are ready, which leaves me with a mix of too soft and too dark.
  • Do not drown it: The cauliflower should be coated in barbecue sauce, not swimming in it. Too much sauce can leave the bites soggy instead of sticky and roasted.
  • Mash the avocado well: I like mashing the avocado slightly as I toss the slaw so it coats the cabbage more like a creamy dressing. It helps the slaw cling together and seasons every bite.
  • Season in layers: Since the bowl has a few separate parts, I make sure the quinoa and slaw each get their own salt and lime. That way, the whole bowl tastes balanced instead of relying only on the sauce for flavor.

📖 Variations

I make this BBQ cauliflower bites bowl in a few different ways depending on what I have in the fridge and what my family is in the mood for that week. These are 3 variations I have on repeat:

Rice bowl: I swap the quinoa for 2 cups of cooked brown rice when I want something a little softer and heartier. This was the version I made when my kids were still on the fence about quinoa.

Bean boost: When I want to turn this bowl into a more filling meal, I add 1 cup of black beans or chickpeas to the finished bowls. I always make this on evenings when my kids have after-school sports or my husband and I have gym.

Spicy BBQ: I stir 1-2 teaspoons of hot sauce or 1/4 teaspoon chipotle powder into the BBQ sauce before coating the cauliflower. This gives the cauliflower a bit of heat, which tastes fantastic served with an extra squeeze of fresh lime juice.

🍽 Serving Suggestions

There is nothing wrong with serving a BBQ cauliflower bites bowl exactly as is, but if you think you might need a little something extra on the side, I recommend vegan flatbread or even some tofu skewers with ginger soy marinade. Or if you want to add something directly to your bowl, miso mushrooms add a lovely umami flavor, and crispy air fryer tempeh adds more protein.

One of the best bowls I made consisted almost entirely of leftover bits and pieces. I used a lentil quinoa salad as the base and topped it with the sticky BBQ cauliflower bites and Mexican coleslaw with cilantro lime dressing. Then I finished it with some avocado green goddess dressing for a touch of creaminess.

🧊 Storing And ♨️ Reheating

Refrigeration: I store the cauliflower, quinoa, and slaw in separate airtight containers in the fridge for up to 3 days. Keeping them separate helps the textures stay intact better than storing assembled bowls.

Freezing: Quinoa can be frozen for up to 5 months in a freezer-safe bag or container. Cauliflower can also be frozen, but it will be much softer after reheating, so I prefer not to. I do not recommend freezing the slaw.

Reheating: I reheat the quinoa and cauliflower in the microwave or in a skillet until warmed through. The slaw stays cold and is added to the bowls right before serving.

❓Recipe FAQs

Why did my BBQ cauliflower bites turn out soggy?

Soggy cauliflower usually means the pan was too crowded or there was too much barbecue sauce coating the florets. When the pieces sit too close together, they steam instead of roasting, and the sauce stays wet instead of turning sticky. I spread the flour out in a single layer and use just enough sauce to coat it well. I let it roast until the edges are browned and the sauce is thick and concentrated.

Can I use frozen cauliflower florets for the BBQ bites?

I prefer using fresh cauliflower, but frozen can work; it just requires a bit more time and preparation. I thaw the frozen florets first and dry them extremely well before coating them in sauce. Frozen cauliflower releases more moisture than fresh, and if it goes into the oven still icy, it will steam. I also roast them a little longer if needed. The texture will be a bit softer, but the flavor still works really well in the bowl.

How do I make the cauliflower bites in the air fryer?

I cook the sauced cauliflower in a single layer in the air fryer at 400F, usually for 12-16 minutes. I shake the basket once or twice so the edges do not darken too fast. It is also a good idea to air fry the florets in a lighter coating of BBQ sauce for the first few minutes, then toss them with a little extra near the end so they stay sticky instead of burning.

Ingredients

BBQ Cauliflower Bites:

  • 1 head cauliflower , chopped into bite sized pieces (gives about 4 cups)
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce (homemade one linked here, or use store bought to make it super easy)

Tangy Avocado Slaw:

  • ¾ – 1 cup avocado , about 1 average sized avocado
  • 4 cups shredded cabbage , can use a mix of red and green or a prepackaged mix too
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt

Cilantro Lime Quinoa:

  • ¾ cup water , could also use broth if you prefer (see note)
  • ½ cup uncooked quinoa (see note)
  • ¼ cup chopped cilantro , divided (can use more if you love cilantro)
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 450 F/ 230 C
  • If you’re making quinoa, mix the quinoa, water, 2 tablespoons of the chopped cilantro and salt in a small pot.
  • Place on stove top on high heat and bring to a boil (about 5-7 minutes).
  • Once boiling, cover, turn down the heat and cook an additional 12-15 minutes until the water is absorbed.
  • Once done remove from heat and let sit until you’re done with everything else. If using ready rice, follow the instructions in the notes.
  • Meanwhile, mix the chopped cauliflower with the BBQ sauce in a bowl.
  • Spread on a parchment lined cookie sheet.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes, until brown and sticky. Bake less if you like your cauliflower al dente, and more if you like it more cooked.
  • While it is baking, mix all slaw ingredients together to make tangy avocado slaw.
  • Don’t forget to watch the quinoa as the cauliflower is baking as well.
  • When the cauliflower is done, fluff the quinoa with a fork, and add the other 2 tablespoons of cilantro and the lime juice. Mix well.
  • Separate everything into 4 bowls, drizzle with extra BBQ sauce if you prefer and devour!
