Bloody Maria Drink (Tequila Bloody Mary)

Allow me to introduce you to a Bloody Maria drink. She is the spicier cousin of Mary. I combine tomato juice, tequila, and pickled jalapenos for this savory and spicy cocktail with plenty of fresh flavor. Ready in just 5 minutes, it has citrus, gentle heat, and a little bite from horseradish in every sip.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Add everything to a large glass measuring cup, or container of choice and mix with a spoon.
  • Using a muddler (or end of a thick spoon or ice cream scooper if you don’t have one), muddle the jalapeno slices until fully mashed. Mix again.
  • Allow to set in fridge for about 30 minutes for the best flavor. You can also strain through a mesh strainer if you prefer a smoother drink.
  • Fill double old fashioned glasses with ice and pour mix in. Add garnish of choice!

Notes

  • My #1 Secret Tip for this Bloody Maria drink recipe is to let the mixture rest in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving. That short resting time allows the horseradish, jalapeno, citrus, and seasoning to blend into the tomato juice. This is how I get a smoother, more balanced cocktail.
  • Start mild: I begin with fewer pickled jalapenos and a smaller splash of Tabasco, then taste before adding more. It is much easier to increase the heat than to tame an overly spicy drink.
  • Use fresh citrus: Freshly squeezed lemon and lime juice make a noticeable difference in the finished cocktail. Bottled juices taste flatter.
  • Taste before: Tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, pickles, jalapeno brine, and hot sauce all contribute sodium, so I always taste the mixture before deciding if it needs additional salt.
  • Chill everything: I like to refrigerate the tomato juice and tequila ahead of time so the drink stays cold longer without depending on the ice.
  • Do not skip muddling: Muddling the pickled jalapeno releases its flavor into the entire drink instead of leaving all the heat in the garnish.
