I have always loved the idea of pigs in a blanket – they’re perfect finger food! But, as a vegetarian it has been challenging to find a good alternative.

The traditional version we are all familiar with in the United States features a pork filling (hence the pig) wrapped in a ‘blanket’ of dough, first credited to a 1957 Betty Crocker cookbook. In the United Kingdom, they are made with sausages wrapped in bacon.

Neither version accommodates a vegetarian or vegan, so I have come up with my own recipe that is just as tasty and convenient!

While they are great on their own for a snack or packed lunch option, this I have so many fun ideas for you to try out when making this recipe! Keep reading to learn about my favorite dipping sauce pairings, other serving suggestions, and tips to make it perfectly every time.

Vegan pigs in a blanket are a tasty addition for any occasion! With only 15 minutes of prep time, I’ve been making this recipe on repeat! Whether serving as an appetizer for game day, birthday party snack, or casual comfort grub, I know you will be just as in love with these as I am.

The crisp outer layer of the tortilla complements the chewy, tender veggie dog in the most amazing way! Plus, there is even a carrot dog version for those of you looking to add extra veggies and fiber into your diet (see my notes below on how to do this!)

I really appreciate that this recipe is so kid-friendly, while also appealing to adults! Finger foods are a great way to get kids to try new things, and I’ve noticed that my pigs in blankets are a winner amongst my kids and their friends! With their bite-size portion, they feel approachable to picky eaters and can be dipped into a familiar sauce or condiment like ketchup.

Accommodate more dietary needs by swapping for gluten-free ingredients to transform these into gluten free vegan pigs in a blanket! This recipe is very versatile and flexible, I’m sure you’ll love it as much as I do!

🥘 Ingredients

My veggie pigs in a blanket recipe requires only simple ingredients that should be easy to find at your local store! Here is what to gather:

Ingredients for vegan pigs in a blanket recipe on a wood background.

Tortillas: I use burrito-size tortillas, as they can be easily cut into long strips for wrapping up the bite sized veggie dogs.

Veggie Dogs: Feel free to make these homemade, but I usually just grab a store bought option for a quick and easy recipe! If you can find mini vegan hot dogs, great! But they are just as easy to cut yourself.

Batter Ingredients: Almond flour, dairy free milk, distilled white vinegar, ground mustard and sea salt combine to make a simple yet tasty batter for dipping the tortillas. No egg or dairy needed!

🔪 How To Make Vegan Pigs In A Blanket

With just a few easy steps you will quickly master the art of making vegetarian pigs in blankets at home! Follow along with my instructions below for how to make pigs in a blanket without crescent rolls:

Preheat & Prepare Batter: First, I preheat my oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit / 190 degrees Celsius. Then, I whisk all the batter ingredients in a shallow dish.

Prepare Tortillas & Hot Dogs: Next, I cut the hot dogs into 3 equal pieces and slice the tortillas (softened in the microwave if needed – see my expert tips section on how to do this) into 4 equal strips. You can trim the hot dogs and tortillas any way you want to make them fit.

Cut up hot dogs and tortilla strips on a plate next to batter.

Dip Into Batter: Now, I dip each tortilla strip in batter, making sure both sides are covered. I allow it to soak for about 30 seconds to get them nice and soft.

Roll & Repeat: Then, I roll up a hot dog piece in a strip of tortilla, sealing the end. It should stick since it is wet. I place them on a parchment lined cookie sheet and repeat with each piece.

Bake: Finally, I bake for 30 minutes, or until browning on the edges. Cook longer if you want them more crisp. Enjoy warm! Dip in ketchup, mustard, or see more options in my serving suggestions section below.

My #1 Secret Tip for this recipe is to use soft, pliable tortillas that are easy to work with!

This veggie pigs in blankets recipe works best with burrito-size tortillas that are as soft as possible, so check the best by date and make sure they are fresh! I have found flour or gluten-free flour works best.

If your tortillas aren’t soft and pliable:

  • Wrap in a damp paper towel and microwave for 30 seconds.
  • If they’re still not soft and warm, heat in 15 second increments until they are.
  • You can also steam them using a double boiler.

Other Tips To Keep In Mind:

  • Best Dipping Methods: When dipping in the batter, allow tortillas to soak for about 30 seconds. Also, don’t leave them too long or they will fall apart.
  • Presentation: You can trim the hot dogs and tortillas any way you want to make them fit. When I want them to look extra pretty I cut the strips a little smaller than the hot dog pieces so they show at each end.
  • Crispy Crust: If you prefer a crispier crust like me, cook a little longer until golden brown. Monitor closely so they do not burn!
  • Double The Recipe: This recipe makes 12 pigs in blankets, serving size is 3, making a good portion for snack time or family dinner. Whenever I am hosting a larger party I double or even triple the recipe to accommodate my guests.

📖 Variations

While this recipe doesn’t have too much room for changes, there are a couple dietary and flavor options I wanted to highlight:

Gluten-Free Option: Easily make this into a gluten free pigs in blankets recipe! Use your favorite gluten-free tortillas and ensure that the veggie dogs of choice do not contain any wheat or other gluten-derived ingredients.

Carrot Dogs: Instead of store bought veggie dogs, I sometimes like to switch things up by using carrots as the base! Boil baby carrots until fork tender and then marinate in your favorite sauce for about 2 hours (or overnight). I like to use a combination of soy sauce, veggie broth, apple cider vinegar, maple syrup, smoked paprika, and garlic powder. Grill the carrots until cooked through and then use them as carrot dogs!

Make It Cheesy: When rolling the hot dog pieces into the tortilla strips, feel free to add a small amount of vegan or regular cheese (not too much since it will get messy). You can also sprinkle some shredded cheese over top before baking.

Herbs & Spices: Add new flavors to the batter with some garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, everything but the bagel seasoning, sesame seeds, or nutritional yeast!

🍽 Serving Suggestions

I love to serve these tasty vegan pigs in blankets as an afternoon snack after school. Or, I’ll make up a batch for a party and enjoy with a variety of dips. You can even enjoy these for a family friendly dinner by pairing with fresh veggies and so much more! Here are my top suggestions to help guide you:

Dipping Sauces: What would this dish be without some tasty dip options? I like to offer a variety of dips with classics like ketchup, mustard, and ranch. But for more unique options, I also serve sides of vegan bbq sauce, mustard bbq sauce, vegan buffalo chicken dip, vegan honey mustard, and vegan cheese sauce.

Party Appetizers: For parties, I serve these on a table with other healthy, tasty sides and appetizers. Some of my go-to’s include a healthy potato salad, coleslaw, dairy-free jalapeno poppers, corn on the cob, air fryer tortilla chips, corn salsa, homemade guacamole, and a mixed green salad.

For Dinner: If I am making this recipe as part of my family’s dinner I always like to make it balanced with some healthy fats and fiber. I pair them with roasted green beans and potatoes or cheesy baked asparagus. For a more filling meal, I like to add some extra protein with vegetarian baked beans or chili mac to each plate!

🫙 Storage Instructions

Whether you have leftover vegetarian pigs in a blanket or want to prepare these in advance, here is my suggested storage method:

Fridge: Once cooked, I store these in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-5 days. Before sealing in the storage container, it is important to let them cool. Otherwise they’ll steam and get soggy.

Reheating: Reheating dairy-free pigs in a blanket is easy! To reheat with the crispiest results I recommend using an oven, toaster oven, or air fryer at 350° Fahrenheit until warm. If I need to warm them in a hurry, I just microwave for 30 seconds or until heated through!

❓Recipe FAQs

How can I keep my pigs in a blanket warm?

When I am serving these meatless pigs in a blanket for a party and want to keep them warm, I place them in the oven at 200 – 225 degrees Fahrenheit and refill the serving platter as needed. Alternatively, you can serve them in a slow cooker but they might become a bit soggy. These can also be served at room temperature, but be sure to put them away after a few hours so they do not go bad.

Can I use puff pastry instead of tortillas?

Yes you can! It just won’t be as healthy, but it’ll still work well. Make sure to choose vegan puff pastry to keep this recipe vegan-friendly. Then wrap the vegan sausages as you would with the tortillas, and brush them with almond milk so that you get a golden crust. Bake at 400 degrees for about 12-15 minutes until cooked through.
