Sugar-Free oatmeal cookies with raisins are sweetened with monk fruit and baked with whole wheat flour. They’re a healthy, moist, and chewy alternative to traditional oatmeal raisin cookies!

While most people love chocolate chip cookies, I’m a huge fan of chewy oatmeal raisin cookies! Especially when they’re crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, with loads of sweet and plump raisins throughout.

But while regular oatmeal cookies sound healthy, they’re actually full of sugar and high in calories, and just like all the other cookies out there!

Which is why I decided to create a healthy oatmeal cookie recipe with all of the decadence of the original and none of the guilt! These sugar free oatmeal cookies taste amazing, and are a healthy treat you can enjoy as a snack or for dessert.

🍪 Ingredients

Monk Fruit Sweetener: Monk fruit sweetener is made from the fruit’s extract. It is 150 to 200 times sweeter than regular sugar. However, it contains no calories, carbohydrates, sodium, or fat.

Whole Wheat Flour: Instead of being made with regular all-purpose flour, these cookies are made with whole wheat flour, making them free of refined flour. If you’d like to make them gluten-free, substitute the whole wheat flour for a gluten-free 1:1 flour blend.

Butter, Eggs, Baking Soda: To help these chewy oatmeal cookies rise and give them great texture.

Rolled Oats: Be sure to use rolled oats or old-fashioned oats which are the same thing. Don’t use steel-cut oats or quick oats. Steel-cut oats have a completely different texture that takes quite a bit of time to cook, while quick oats become too mushy in cookies.

Cinnamon, Vanilla Extract, Salt, Raisins: Use ground cinnamon. If you don’t have cinnamon, nutmeg or pumpkin pie spice will also work. Vanilla extract and salt bring out the natural sweetness in this healthy oatmeal raisin cookie recipe without needing sugar. Raisins add natural sweetness and moisture!

Note: With the raisins, these are no-sugar-added cookies, but since raisins contain sugar, they are not 100% sugar free. To make these 100% sugar free and diabetic friendly, omit the raisins. 

📖 Variations

  • To Make These Diabetic Friendly: Omit the raisins so they are 100% sugar free.
  • Gluten-Free: Make these cookies gluten-free by subbing a gluten-free 1:1 flour mixture.
  • Almond Flour Oatmeal Cookies: Almond flour is another gluten-free great alternative you can use to make these cookies. However, if you decide to go this route use 1/2 a cup of almond flour and 1/2 a cup of oat flour.
  • More Add-Ins: Mix in dark chocolate chips (oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are the best!), almonds, walnuts, pecans, or any other type of nut you enjoy. You can also add more dried fruit, or sub another type of dried fruit such as dried cranberries or blueberries for the raisins.
  • Keto Oatmeal Cookies: To make this recipe even more low carb remove the oats, whole wheat flour, and raisins and substitute it with 2 ½ cup almond flour, 4 tbsp coconut flour, 1 cup flaked almonds, and ½ cup shredded unsweetened coconut or coconut flakes.
  • Vegan Oatmeal Cookies: To make this vegan friendly, substitute the eggs with 2 flax eggs (2 tbsp ground flax seeds mixed with 5 tbsp water) and substitute the regular butter for vegan butter or coconut oil.
  • Another Sugar Substitute: If you don’t have monk fruit sweetener but want to keep these refined sugar free, mash three ripe bananas in the food processor, then add 1/4 cup of maple syrup or honey. Blend until smooth. Add this to your butter. You will likely need to add a bit more flour if the cookie dough seems too moist. You can also make these sugar free oatmeal cookies with stevia if you need to. I would not recommend using splenda as it’s highly processed and not a healthy sweetener.

🔪 Instructions

Step 1: In a large bowl add the softened butter and sweetener. Using a stand mixer with the paddle attachment or hand mixer, mix for 3-4 minutes until well combined and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well in between adding each large egg. Mix through the vanilla.

Step 2: In a medium bowl, sift the dry ingredients including the flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon.

Step 3: Add the flour mixture to the creamed butter, folding together until well combined. Fold in the rolled oats and raisins. Stir until well combined. At this time you can also add any additional add-ins you like such as chocolate chips or nuts. Be aware that adding chocolate chips will add to the total amount of sugar per cookie.

Step 4: Cover cookie dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes to chill. Preheat oven to 330F/ 170C. Line cookie sheet with parchment paper. When the dough has chilled scoop out a tablespoon-sized amount of dough and roll it into balls.

Step 5: Place on the prepared baking sheet and flatten slightly with your hands. Make sure to leave some space between each cookie dough ball. Bake for 8-10 minutes, until lightly golden. Allow these low sugar oatmeal cookies to cool completely on a cooling rack. Cookies will firm up as they cool.

❓ Recipe FAQs

Are oatmeal cookies healthy? Are oatmeal cookies keto?

These are a healthier version of the classic oatmeal cookie with no refined sugar added. If you’re reducing your sugar intake these are a good option with only 1 gram of sugar per cookie. They are also a good source of oat fiber. If you want completely sugar-free cookies, leave out the raisins. There are a total of 10 net carbs per cookie. See the nutritional information in the recipe card for complete details.

Are these diabetic oatmeal cookies?

Monk fruit sweetener does not raise blood sugar levels, which makes it safe for diabetics. However, be aware that these cookies do contain raisins that have some natural sugars (2 grams per cookie).

Why aren’t my cookies soft and chewy?

Brown sugar is what makes cookies chewy. Since these cookies do not have brown sugar they will not be as chewy as standard oatmeal raisin cookies, but they will be nice and soft.

Are these sugar free oatmeal cookies really sugar-free?

These cookies are almost sugar-free. They have 2 grams of sugar per cookie which comes from the naturally occurring sugars in the raisins. The monk fruit sweetener is a natural sugar-free alternative. Additionally, these cookies have only 9 grams of net carbs. But you can reduce the carbs even further by using a low carb flour like almond flour.

How do you store these sugar-free oatmeal cookies?

Allow the cookies to cool completely before transferring them to an airtight container. Store at room temperature for up to 5 days.

💭 Expert Tips

  • If you’re unable to find monk fruit sweetener you can use erythritol or xylitol instead. If using xylitol please be mindful that it is toxic for small animals.
  • These healthy low carb oatmeal cookies will become firmer as they cool.
  • If you add in additional mix ins, be sure to reduce the amount of raisins by the amount of mix-ins you add in. You shouldn’t have more than 1 cup of total mix-ins added.
  • Make sure you flatten these cookies with your hands slightly before you bake them. They won’t spread naturally on their own.
